What Caused Terry Hall Depression? Terry Hall suffered from depression before his death, and fans want to know what caused it.

Terry Hall, the frontman of the socially conscious ska band The Specials, died at the age of 63.

The singer rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to hits like Ghost Town, Gangsters, and Too Much Too Young, and he is known for his gloomy persona and astute wit.

He left The Specials in 1981 to form Fun Boy Three with Neville Staple and Lynval Golding, which went on to have a string of hit singles.

Terry was a wonderful husband and Father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most sincere of souls, The Specials said in a statement after the singer passed away following a brief illness.

While speaking with comedian Richard Herring for his most recent episode of the Leicester Square Theatre podcast, the ska legend revealed his battles with depression and addiction since he was kidnapped and mistreated in the early 1970s.

He admitted to not attending school and being somewhat high prior to going on valium for about a year. He claimed that when he was 12 years old, he was kidnapped in France by a pedophile ring, which was a real eye-opener for him.

He went on to say that he could laugh about it at the time, but something in his mind seemed to switch, making him feel as if he didn’t have to, and he stopped paying attention to anyone after that.

Hall claimed that the incident caused him to experience lifelong depression and led him to drop out of school at 14 after developing a Valium addiction.

Music served as a form of peace and comfort for Hall, who joined the punk band Squad in his hometown and earned his first writing credit on the band’s single Red Alert. Jerry Dammers of The Specials noticed him and used a terrible pun to convince him to become their frontman.
