Maribel Ramos, an Army veteran, appeared to have everything under control. She was about to embark on a new chapter in her life because she was only a few days away from graduating. Maribel’s sudden disappearance in May 2013 was, however, tragic.

Maribel was honorably discharged in 2008 after serving for eight years, including two tours of duty in Iraq.
She had just finished her criminal justice degree at California State University, Fullerton at the time of her disappearance. The 36-year-old shared an apartment with a roommate in Orange, California.
Maribel’s roommate called in around 10:40 a.m. on May 3, 2013, to say she hadn’t returned home the night before. Her family soon reported her missing after being unable to contact her.

She had also been absent from a softball game on May 3. Nothing out of the ordinary was discovered during a search of the apartment. Maribel’s car was still there, but her phone and purse were gone.
On May 17, 2013, police conducted a search in a remote area of Modjeska Canyon, California, and discovered her body in a shallow grave. Maribel was found thanks to dental records. The remains, however, were too decomposed to determine the cause of death.

Investigators examined Maribel’s phone records and discovered that she had called her boyfriend, Paul Lopez, the night she went missing.
Paul stated that he was at work that night, but Maribel was arguing with her roommate Kwang Chol “KC” Joy. It was about him not being able to pay his rent for that month. Maribel needed KC to leave the house the next day.

Maribel was seen on surveillance video at the apartment complex dropping off the rent check at the front desk around 8:30 p.m. on May 2, sometime after the phone call with Paul.
Maribel was last seen alive at this point. According to the show, when KC was questioned, he admitted to arguing with Maribel but claimed to have gone for a drive around 9 p.m. while she was still there.
When he returned, KC informed him that she had left. However, there was no evidence linking him to Maribel’s disappearance.
When speaking to the media, KC cooperated with authorities and pleaded for Maribel’s safe return. He claimed he had nothing to do with her disappearance and added, “I just want her back.”
I desperately need her to return because she is my best friend. Actually, she is my only friend and family member, so I miss her.” The police noticed scratches on his arm, but KC claimed they were caused by thorny bushes in a nearby park.
Maribel called 911 about 11 days before she disappeared, saying she was afraid of her roommate after a conversation with KC.
Since KC’s phone and laptop were being examined by the police, he visited the local library on a regular basis to access the internet and use the computers there.
During one such visit, the authorities kept a close eye on his online activity. This step yielded a significant lead in the case.
KC looked up the time it took for a body to decay and later used maps to view a desolate location in Modjeska Canyon, among other things. Maribel’s remains were discovered after the police searched the area for about 45 minutes.

KC, then 55, went on trial for Maribel’s murder in July 2014. The prosecution claimed that the two had an argument about rent, which led to KC killing his roommate.
They also claimed that KC was madly in love with Maribel. Maribel, on the other hand, was said to have suffered from paranoia and may have been suicidal, according to KC’s defense.
They went on to say that Maribel could have died from a medical condition or committed suicide, leaving a distraught KC to dispose of the body.
KC was eventually found guilty of second-degree murder. “Family wants me to apologize, which I cannot apologize for something I haven’t done,” he said before his sentencing. Maybe [the] truth will come out someday, or maybe I’ll just die inside the prison.”
KC was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison in September 2014. According to prison records, he is still incarcerated at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, California. In February 2023, KC will be eligible for parole.
