He has been diagnosed with a mental illness, but Correctional Services has determined that he is not a danger to society. According to Nxumalo, he was released on strict parole conditions on March 3, 2022.
Correctional Services has kept the parole condition confidential, they have added, he would be monitored, and if found to be not complying with the condition of his placement, the department can revoke his parole.

Singabakho Nxumalo, the spokesperson of the Correctional services department said Morne Harmse’s sentence was expected to expire on 9 March 2029. As per him, Harmse completed his legislated minimum detention period on 9 June 2019.
Harmse used Katana – a Japanese “Samurai” sword to kill then 16 years old Jacques Pretorius. He was his schoolmate from Nic Diederichs Technical High School pupil, in August 2008.
He was found guilty of a charge of murder and three charges of attempted murder. He was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in 2009. He was 18 years old when he committed the crime.
