Professor Mclaws provided expert advice on COVID-19 to Australians throughout the pandemic with expertise in hospital infection and infectious diseases control. She has been serving as an epidemiologist at the UNSW since 1992.

Her Covid-19-related activities include being a member of the WHO Health Emergencies Program Experts Advisory Panel for Infection Prevention and Control Preparedness, a member of the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission Covid Infection Prevention and Control Taskforce, and Readiness and Response to Covid-19.

Although she announced a month of sick leave on Twitter, she admitted that she was having a good time with her family and was in no rush to join the work. Professor said, “Right now, I’m enjoying the family, the kids, some mates while I’m on leave.”

She added, “I have a perfect loving husband who makes great lunches and supper. So for the moment, I’m going to enjoy this change.” After being diagnosed with brain cancer, she announced her treatment was underway in February.

Professor Mclaws is recognized for her distinguished service to medical research, particularly in epidemiology and infection prevention, health administration, and tertiary education.
