Uncasville resident Adam Lapkowski received his law enforcement diploma in December 2008 and began working in the patrol division the following year.
In 2019, he was named Waterford’s Policeman of the Year. Lapkowski, a Waterford resident, graduated from Waterford High School in 2003 after attending Great Neck School as a child.
He attended the University of Connecticut at Avery Point for two years before enrolling at Southern Connecticut State University to study finance.

State and municipal Police discovered Waterford Police Officer Death, Adam Lapkowski, 37, at the Poquetanuck Cemetery on Route 2A.
“Adam had amazing character. He was one of our best cops and was well-liked, very skilled, and highly respected, “Marc Balestracci, Chief of Police in Waterford, stated.
“He was a friend, a guide, and a great benefit to our Police officers and the neighborhood. Many people will still be impacted by his legacy.”
State & local Police responded to a Waterford Police bulletin on Monday afternoon to be on the lookout for a distressed male driving a vehicle and maybe carrying a weapon.
According to Ledyard Police Chief John Rich, the radio alert reached his department at 12:07 pm State Police and Ledyard Police arrived at the cemetery at 12:18 and 12:20, respectively.
Lapkowski was discovered by authorities lying on the ground and not breathing, according to a State Police report. On the spot, emergency medical personnel declared him dead.
Joanne Witt-Lapkowski, who was killed in 1996, was buried in the cemetery. She was Lapkowski’s biological mother.
When questioned about killing Witt-Lapkowski, 40, during a dispute at her Norwich apartment, Scott McLeod admitted to doing so.
He was given a 40-year prison sentence, and his release is set for 2036. Lapkowski’s death is still under investigation, according to State Police.
Adam Lapkowski Family: Meet His Parents
Adam was a little secretive when it came to his personal information, like his family details, as the Police officer has not Adam had not revealed much information about his family.
But Adam’s uncle and adoptive Father, John Lapkowski, remembered on Wednesday how his son “always wanted to be a Police officer” since he was a young child.
Not many individuals, he observed, “get to be what they wanted when they were kids.” He had fond memories of his son as a fantastic basketball player.
He participated in three seasons of varsity basketball at Waterford High School before playing two seasons at UConn Avery Point.
Lapkowski claimed that his son was intelligent and did well in arithmetic and reading as a child. He recalled taking Adam and his pals to Yankee Stadium and having family meals there.
He spoke of his son, saying, “I always used to grab this guy and say, “I love this little man.” It’s sad, he continued.
“I’m just crushed, wondering if there was any way I could have discovered he was in trouble and tried to pick him up.”
Shana Golden, Lapkowski’s wife, and his two sons are left behind. At the time of his passing, Lapkowski’s divorce from Golden was still ongoing after being filed in November.
