Despite heading into the game on the back of three straight victories, Wilson’s credentials as starting quarterback were still being questioned heading into the Jets’ latest outing at MetLife Stadium.
The 24-year-old was supposed to serve as understudy to Aaron Rodgers this season, before New York’s marquee summer arrival tore his Achilles four snaps into his much-anticipated debut in September.
Wilson has filled in as first choice ever since, yet on the whole he has been unable to fill the huge void left by the four-time MVP.
And in a heavy defeat on Monday, it proved another miserable night for Wilson as he took seven sacks and threw no touchdowns in their defeat by the Chargers.

He also produced two fumbles as Los Angeles kept New York’s offense at bay for the majority of the evening – and for Jets fans, enough is enough.
Wilson and the Jets couldn’t get anything going despite facing the NFL’s worst-ranked passing defense. He was 33 of 49 for 263 yards while taking a step back in his development.
A number of the team’s supporters took to X on Monday to call for Wilson’s time as starting quarterback to come to an end, with head coach Robert Saleh urged to bring in veteran backup Trevor Siemian.
‘I’m sorry, Zach is holding this team back,’ one user wrote. ‘It’s gotta be Trevor time next week against LV. Enough is enough with Zach.’
A second user said: ‘Trevor Siemian should start on Sunday #Jets’.
Another put: ‘When is Saleh going to say enough is enough? Their defense is too good to have to deal with this week in and week out. Wilson is hot garbage! The offense is “not close” like Saleh keeps saying. They’re awful!!!’
A fourth hit out at the Jets offense by writing: ‘This is what happens when your defense is on the field the entire f****ng game’.
One fan went even further and called for New York’s coach to pay the price for his decision to entrust in Wilson.
They said: ‘Robert Saleh deserves to be fired for allowing Zach Wilson to ruin yet another season of sheer dominance from the Jets defense.’
Another commented: ‘Trevor Siemian can’t be as bad as Zach Wilson. If he is, you move on. What’s clear is Wilson ain’t it. Too much talent to be this inept. It’s honestly malpractice they haven’t tried anything else.’
While one asked: ‘What was the f****g point of signing Trevor Siemian, if Saleh is just going to let him rot on the practice squad? Scared of hurting Wilson’s feelings, or something?’
When asked if Monday’s game represented a step back for Wilson, Saleh said in his postgame press conference: ‘I don’t know if you can say step back. Like I said, it’s all encompassing.
‘Obviously he’s gonna want some things that he wishes he could’ve done better. From protection to… just a little bit of everything, it was one of those bizarre games where every time we had momentum [it was] just a self-inflicted wound.
‘Was is it his best game? Obviously not. Was it his worst game? No, I’m not going to even say it was close to his worst game.’
