The Kayak Community announced his death. The accident happened while they were paddling Mexico’s Class V Upper Rio Jalacingo near Veracruz, Mexico. In addition, his fellow kayaker Nathan Werner of Fort Collins, CO, was severely injured in the accident, suffering multiple spine fractures and a clavicle fracture.
It was also reported that the incident occurred as a result of the two expert kayakers inadvertently running a mandatory portage on the classic, basalt-lined Mexican river in the Veracruz region, being ushered over an unrunnable waterfall.
According to kayaker Emmett de Maynadier, he went for rescue after not seeing two kayakers return to the lodge. He also stated that he didn’t realize Mayo had died until four hours after his first contact with Werner.
