Woodward claimed Bennell allegedly assaulted hundreds, if not thousands, of aspiring teenagers who dreamed of pursuing their careers in football.

In November 2016, it was revealed that as a trainee at Crew Alexandra in the 1980s, Woodward was subjected to frequent child sexual abuse by now-convicted pedophilia Barry Bennell.

The Guardian reported in June 2019, shortly before Andy Woodward’s biography was published, Barry Bennell’s cousin, Ronald Benell, had been sentenced to life in prison in 1971.
Ronald Benell was convicted of murdering Woodward’s aunt, Lynda Stewart, and Barry Bennell married Andy’s elder sister, also named Lynda, in 1991.

He further added that Bennell threatened him to take away his career, saying, “It was that control- that all I wanted to do was be a player.”
