He received his undergraduate education at Harvard and his microbiology degree at the University of Virginia. After completing an internal medicine residency at SUNY Stony Brook, he received fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

He was the Director of the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program in 2014.
