Tonra teaches, conducts research, and publishes on European foreign, security, and defense policy. He teaches, conducts research, and publishes on European and Irish foreign, security, defense policy, and international relations.
He stated that he is resigning because of the muted response of his university to the Ukraine invasion. He wrote, “other universities have publicly criticized the invasion of Ukraine, but UCS has only stated that it is worried about the issue there.”
Tonra informed everyone that he will continue to teach and work as a Full Professor at the UCD School of Politics and International Relations. As well as the UCD College of Social Sciences and Law.
According to 247news, lack of response made Prof Tonra “deeply, deeply ashamed.” He claims that the presence of the Chinese government-funded Confucius Institute on campus is dividing academics.
Prof Tonra also issued a Twitter statement. According to the university, he does not represent the same perspectives that underpin UCD’s global engagement approach.
He previously chaired the Academy’s International Affairs Standing Committee. He has also worked at the University of Wales’ Department of International Politics, Trinity College, and CSIS.
