Mr. Avenatti’s allegations come only weeks before he goes on trial in Manhattan for allegedly stealing $300,000 from an adult actress named Stormy Daniels, who was at the heart of a scandal during Mr. Trump’s first presidential campaign. To those counts, he has pled not guilty.

His lawyers stated that he was suing the government for reimbursement under the Federal Tort Claims Act, which allows Michale to sue the government if the claim is not resolved within six months.

In January 2020, Avenatti, 50, was arrested and imprisoned after prosecutors claimed he violated the terms of his bail in a California fraud case.

According to Mr. Avenatti’s lawsuit, he was first held in solitary confinement at the Santa Ana Jail in Orange County, then transported to Manhattan and housed at the now-defunct Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he spent the majority of his time in the most secure wing, 10 South.

Michael Avenatti was sentenced for two and a half years in jail for his role in the Nike extortion scam.

Avenatti’s behavior was deemed “outrageous” by US District Judge Paul G. Gardephe, who stated that he “hijacked his client’s allegations and utilized those claims to pursue his own objective, which was to extort millions of dollars from Nike for himself.”

The legal issues that Avenatti is dealing with are far from over.

He also faces a fraud trial in the Los Angeles area next week, a second California criminal trial later this year, and a separate Manhattan trial next year, where he is accused of defrauding Daniels out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In 2011, Mr. Avenatti married Lisa Avenatti (previously Lisa Storie).

They have a little boy together and the couple was married for seven years.

She also alleged that her spouse utilized a variety of strategies to delay a divorce settlement and avoid paying support to their son, Tino.
